Simple Fixes You Can Check

Typically, there could be several reasons why your AC is no longer running and cooling your home. Some of them are easy to fix on your own:

  • Circuit breaker switch
  • Thermostat
  • Air filter

Start by checking the easiest items first: the switch on your circuit breaker and the on/off switch on your HVAC. Next, check your thermostat by slowly changing the temperature. If working properly the thermostat should emit a clicking sound and turn on. Finally, a clogged air filter can cause quite a few problems including burning out your blower motor.

Fixes that Require A Technician

On the other hand, professionals should handle other problems with your AC unit. First, failure to properly switch off the electricity to your unit before you begin work can have disastrous results. Additionally, AC units contain chemicals and refrigerants which, if not handled properly, can jeopardize your family’s safety. Moreover, a certified technician will be able to check these components to get your system running smoothly again:

  • Evaporator coil
  • Drain pan
  • Leaks

Frequently, dust accumulation causes problems with the evaporator coil and drain. The evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air. If a technician doesn’t clean your evaporator coil periodically, dust can build up coating your evaporator coil.  Dust acts as an insulator preventing the air from cooling. Typically, this will strain your system until it malfunctions.

Similarly, dust causes clogged drain problems. As air flows past the evaporator coil and cools, moisture in the air condenses on the coil. When enough water accumulates, it drips off into the drain pan and out of the house. If there is dust on the coil, it will mix with the water to drip into the pan. This dirt will build up over time, clogging your drainage system. Finally, a refrigerant leak will deplete your system of the cooling element.

Blower Motor Replacement

One of the most common HVAC problems is blower motor failure. Uniquely, the blower motor is responsible for forcing air over the evaporator coil and then through the ducts. It moves enormous amounts of air per hour through the AC unit and into your home.

Sometimes instead of the blower needing replacement. only a part of the motor needs repair. For instance, there are 2 capacitors within the motor that may burn out. Replacing a burned-out capacitor is a lot cheaper than replacing the blower motor. This is where an experienced technician will be able to tell whether you need a new capacitor or indeed a new motor.

Comparatively, the costs of repair will depend on the problem with your system and the type of system. Similarly, the cost of a new blower motor depends on the model unit. Call Aspire Heating & Cooling and let us provide you with a personalized solution.
