How to Improve Indoor Air Quality without Breaking the Bank
While you may not realize it, poor ventilation in your home may impact your health. Fumes from ingredients in cleaning supplies, new carpeting and paints can pollute your indoor air. Consequently, poor indoor air quality can detrimentally affect your health. From minor irritations like headaches and dizziness to major ailments like cancer, allergens in the air can make you sick. Moreover, if your home has pollutants in the air, you will be constantly re-exposing yourself to these contaminants. Mold spores are especially virulent, causing a variety of health issues. If you have air pollution in your home, what can you do to improve indoor air quality on a budget?
Aspire Heating and Cooling has several solutions for removing contaminants from your indoor air. Whether you need a new thermostat or an air purifying system, we can help. Our technicians are experienced and certified. Plus, with many financing options, we want to help you improve your air quality, even if you’re on a budget.
Examples of Indoor Air Pollution
Indoor air contaminants include bacteria, viruses, animal dander, house dust, mites and pollen. While some of these pollutants are impossible to eliminate, you can greatly reduce them to where their effect is negligible. For example, dust mites are one of those organisms that exist nearly everywhere. Additionally, they generate some of the most common indoor allergens triggering asthma attacks and other allergic reactions. Mold is another contaminant that exists anywhere there is excess moisture. In particular, mold can accumulate in duct work allowing spores to sail out into the rooms of your house. These spores can cause long term effects which include some respiratory diseases, heart disease and cancer.
Notably, there are some ways you can easily control both dust mites and mold. First, maintaining the relative humidity between 30% – 60% will help control both of these contaminants. Moreover, routinely cleaning so that dust does not accumulate will help eliminate the food of dust mites. Another easy way is to increase ventilation by bringing in more outside air. Simply opening up the windows and doors brings in fresh air. This increased ventilation helps remove or dilute airborne pollutants coming from your indoor sources.
Additionally, when considering cleaning dust from your house, don’t forget about your air ducts. Ductwork especially can become contaminated with dust, allowing dust mites to multiply. Add some moisture and mold will set up in your ductwork too. Scheduling routine cleaning of your air ducts will eliminate and prevent these pollutants from entering your home.
Indoor Plants that Remove Air Pollution
Notably, some studies have indicated that certain houseplants can actually improve indoor air quality. In 1989, NASA undertook a study to determine which if any houseplants could remove pollutants. The study showed that houseplants requiring low light demonstrated the potential for improving indoor air quality.
In particular, some of these air improving houseplants include the Peace Lily, Boston Fern, Spider, and Aloe Vera plants. Furthermore, these plants removed benzene, an ingredient in paints and plastics and formaldehyde, an ingredient in many household cleaners. So, you could place several of these potted beauties around your house to help combat indoor air pollution.
Improve Indoor Air Quality with Filtering and Purification Devices
Of course, you may want to consider installing some filtration devices to help combat asthma and allergy attacks. One of the simplest ways to do this is to control the humidity in your home. Dry air can cause irritation of the nasal passages and eye irritation. On the other hand, too high a humidity level can increase dust mites and mold growth. Installing a humidifier will provide the perfect moisture level in your home.
Furthermore, there are several filtering and purification systems that will attach to your current HVAC system. These systems kill micro-organisms and filter particles eliminating indoor air pollution. Some of the systems we can install are the Honeywell Filter Box or GPS cold plasma air purification system. Not sure which system is best for your home? Call Aspire Heating and Cooling and one of our technicians will explain the benefits of each product to you.
